Prepare For Downtime Over The Holidays: SingleHop Inc.

December 14, 2007, TopHost.com

Dedicated hosting services provider advises online shoppers to be prepared for downtime and slow service during the holiday shopping season.

December 14, 2007 (TopHosts News Brief) - SingleHop Inc., a Chicago, Illinois-based managed dedicated hosting services provider, has advised online shoppers that they should be prepared for downtime this holiday season.

The number of people shopping online the day after Thanksgiving this year increased by 20 percent. According to the websitepulse.com monitoring service, Sears' website went down during the "Black Friday" shopping rush.

"It's pretty clear that online sales are critical for a retailer's success, and anything that slows or impedes the user experience can have an incredible and immediate bottom line cost," Zak Boca, SingleHop's president, said in a statement issued to the media. "Normally a website is slow because the server cannot handle the amount of connections that it is receiving. Too many visitors and you have a crash and can literally count the money you are not making by the second. The answer to this is load balancing. Load balancing is done by routing requests across multiple servers. One visitor comes in, and they go to Web server 1, and the next visitor will go to Web server 2. It basically just serves as a director for traffic and as such, it allows a website to easily scale."
