WebSitePulse 2016 Vacation Planning Websites Performance Report Summary

This year again, during the vacation planning season (May 20th – June 30th), we made a performance monitoring of 13 popular web sites – travel agencies and booking web sites. Our monitoring keeps an eye on their response time and uptime (availablity) and reports the stats on a daily basis.

Base on these two measures, we found out that the response time for the whole period varies between 1.5 and 9.5 seconds for a simple transaction that looks for a hotel for specific dates, and then chooses an offer. Apart from that, the uptime (availability) was far more promising – the uptime for the whole period of 50 days varies from 99.5% and 100%.

This year we have a website that scored 100% uptime from all monitorng locations - San Francisco, Amsterdam, Washington and Sydney which is a quite good achievement. The address of the website is tripadvisor.com. The second and the third place in availability category goes to travelocity.com and homeaway.com with the respective values of 99.997% and 99.993% upime.

As far as response time (speed), the first place goes for tingo.com with average reponse of 1.568 seconds, followed by tripadvisor.com with 2.024 seconds, and travelocity.com with 2.632 seconds.

The worst performers are not so bad comparing to the last year. The choicehotels.com goes to the bottom of the list with average response time of 9.469 seconds, and looking at the availability chart, the worst performer was hotels.com with 99.532%.

Methodology:
Performance and availability are measured for a typical travel-related booking web transaction at 15 minute monitoring interval, every day, 24/7. The WebSitePulse application monitoring service is used to collect data and to create the reports.
The steps in each transaction are comparable for all websites, and reflect the real online buyers' experience. The simultaneous monitoring is performed from four locations of the WebSitePulse global monitoring network: San Francisco, CA; Washington, DC; Sydney, Australia, and Amsterdam, Netherlands. In case of a detected malfunction or unavailability, the system performs automated error verification from four independent resources and only after the above procedure is performed and has returned consistent results, the detected error is confirmed, recorded, and included in the daily performance reports. In these cases, an advanced WebSitePulse exclusive feature comes into play - Forced Monitoring -, which automatically switches to a 3 minute monitoring interval for increased accuracy.

About WebSitePulse:
WebSitePulse is a leading provider of global, independent, and objective availability and performance monitoring of web sites, servers, network components, web applications, e-business- and email round-trip transactions.
