Websitepulse 2023 Mother's Day Performance & Uptime Report Summary

As the day comes to a close, the end of Mother's Day 2023 is marked by a sense of warmth and fulfillment. Approximately 86% of Americans said they would celebrate the holiday, planning to spend $35.7 billion — $4 billion more than 2022 Mother's Day spending.

The holiday was successful for online retailers, who fulfilled about 34% of the gift purchases, down slightly from 36% in 2022.

Now that the holiday weekend is over, we have finished monitoring 11 of the most popular gift- shopping websites for our 2023 Mother's Day Report.

For this Performance Report, WebSitePulse, as usual, measures the website's home page performance and a complete web transaction representative for the end user's interactions with a website.

The report measures Uptime and Response Time as the most critical metrics for the availability and reliability of any web-based operation, which is crucial for the end-user's overall online experience. Measurements of the multi-step online transactions are made every 15 minutes, simultaneously, from 3 different monitoring locations: Washington, DC (US East Coast), San Francisco, CA (US West Coast), and Chicago, IL (US Central).

The overall performance of most of the monitored gift-shopping websites demonstrated their preparedness to meet the challenges of the expected heavier web traffic during Mother's Day week.

We have found out that the average daily response time from all monitored websites was 2.038 sec., which is nearly 0.5 seconds faster than the last year's. The daily average responses by location are as follows:
  • Washington DC (US East Coast) – 1.799 sec
  • San Francisco, CA (US West Coast) – 2.567 sec
  • Chicago, IL (US Central) – 1.748 sec
For the fourth year in a row, the speed leader in the Mother's Day Report is personalizationmall.com, with an average response time of 0.478 seconds, followed once again by berries.com (0.915 sec) and fromyouflowers.com (1.203 sec). Far away at the bottom of the table this year was urbanstems.com, with 4.068 seconds average response time, which probably frustrated many site visitors and may have led to high website abandonment.

Compared to the last year's performance, the three leaders increased their response time by an average of 0.1 seconds, while the slowest site this year performed much better than the previous year by almost 3.5 seconds on average.

The daily average uptime for the entire group of 11 websites for the 2023 Mother's Day shopping season was 99.929%. The daily average uptime by location is as follows:
  • Washington DC (US East Coast) – 99.932%
  • San Francisco, CA (US West Coast) – 99.922%
  • Chicago, IL (US Central) – 99.935%
This year we have 6 of the 11 monitored gift shopping websites performed with no interruptions (100% uptime) during the whole monitoring period. Gifts.com was the store with the lowest uptime — %99.298, which was down for nearly 2 hours during the monitored period.

Methodology:
The 2023 Mother's Day Reports reflect a complete web transaction, representative for the End Users' interactions with a website. The reporting period covers the dates between May 5h and May 15th, 2023. Performance and availability measurements are made for a typical multi-step web transaction at 15 minute monitoring interval, every day 24/7. The WebSitePulse application monitoring service is used to collect data and to create the reports.
The steps in each transaction are comparable for all websites, and reflect the real online shopper experience. The simultaneous monitoring is performed from 3 US-based locations of the WebSitePulse monitoring network: San Francisco, CA, Chicago, IL, and Washington, DC. In case of a detected malfunction or unavailability, the system performs automated error verification from 3 independent resources and only after the above procedure is performed and has returned consistent results, the detected error is confirmed, recorded, and included in the daily performance reports. In these cases, an advanced WebSitePulse exclusive feature comes into play - Forced Monitoring -, which automatically switches to a 3 minute monitoring interval for increased accuracy.

About WebSitePulse:
WebSitePulse is a leading provider of global, independent, and objective availability and performance monitoring of web sites, servers, network components, web applications, e-business- and email round-trip transactions.
