WebSitePulse 2022 Vacation Planning Websites Performance and Uptime Report Summary

The vacation planning has ended. In this post-pandemic year, people tend to travel more and spend more on their vacation planning and their trip. Despite the rising costs due to inflation, most travelers haven't canceled their plans. Hotels are now seeing strong demand not just from leisure travelers but also from group and business travelers.

Summer vacation spending in 2022 was predicted to be even higher than the last year's. Americans' total summer vacation spending is closing in on a record-breaking $194 Billion, according to Allianz Partners USA's 14th annual Vacation Confidence Index. That is a 26% increase over the last year.

Our 2022 Vacation Planning Season Report is also ready. For its purpose, we at WebSitePulse have monitored 10 of the most popular international websites for travel and tourism during the vacation planning period between May 20th and June 30th, 2022.

For this Performance Report, WebSitePulse measured the performance of the websites' home pages and a complete web transaction like an end-user would interact with the website.

The report measured Uptime and Response Time as the most critical metrics for all web-based operations' availability and reliability. Measurements of the multi-step online transactions are made every 15 minutes, simultaneously from 4 different monitoring locations: Washington DC (US East Coast), San Francisco, CA (US West Coast), Sydney (Australia), and Amsterdam (Netherlands, Europe).

The overall performance of the monitored travel booking websites demonstrated their preparedness to meet the traffic during the whole 2022 vacation planning season. We have found that the daily average response time from all monitored websites was 5.391 sec. (0.543 sec faster than last year's). The daily average response times by location are as follow:
  • Washington DC (US East Coast) – 3.855 sec
  • San Francisco, CA (US West Coast) – 5.136 sec
  • Sydney (Australia) – 8.153 sec
  • Amsterdam (Netherlands, Europe) – 4.438 sec
The speed winner in this year's report is hotelplanner.com, with an average response time of 1.306 seconds, followed by vrbo.com (3.204 sec) and airbnb.com (3.505 sec). Far away at the bottom of the table was edreams.com with 10.975 seconds average response time, which may have caused some lost profit.

Compared to the last year's performance, the three leaders improved their response time by an average of 0.017 seconds, while the slowest site this year performed on average 0.504 seconds faster than in the 2021 vacation planning monitored period.

The daily average uptime for the entire group of 10 websites for the 2022 travel planning season was 99.39%. The daily average uptime by location is as follows:
  • Washington DC (US East Coast) – 99.39%
  • San Francisco, CA (US West Coast) – 99.37%
  • Sydney (Australia) – 99.37%
  • Amsterdam (Netherlands, Europe) – 99.39%
This year's uptime winner with 99.997% is tripadvisor.com, followed by flipkey.com and booking.com (99.996%). At the bottom of the availability chart stands homeaway.com with 94.589%, which means it was not accessible to its customers for nearly four and a half days during the monitored period.
